Veranda

Verandas are rustic porches terraces that do not exceed the plan of construction and are placed at the entrance with various purposes. When talking about a veranda or ’ satra’ as we call it here in Maramures, we see the space between the outer wall in the front of the house and a number of columns, previously placed, having between each other handrails often clogged with fretted board panels in various models, at a height of about 70-90 cm from the floor. In some houses, the porch is not necessarily only in front of the house but can also be in the side or even all around it. In continuity of the porch there is a very beautiful space , peasant calling it "tarnat", that is actually a small porch that is a little bit out of the plan of the house , forming a large space like a room with a mini-living.

The entrance in the veranda is usually made between two short pillars, which continue with a short railing that goes to other two pillars, from one side and the other. The entry is not necessarily in front of the house, especially when you have a house with a ‘tarnat’, so it is recommended that the entry is made lateral, in order to not ruin the continuity of the front porch.

Depending on how he chooses to make the porch, the customer can opt for a porch with fir elements and pillars, layers, crowns or beams or arches, which of course can be processed with taste and professionalism. But the most beautiful porches are of course those made of oak with carved pillars with traditional folk Maramures motifs.

The pillars of the porch have those spectacular oak twists symbolizing bread, the wealth of the country, grain richest, especially here in Maramures, where women still make bread in the form of wrapped coils. All other symbols and patterns are found in the work area.
We must not forget that the porches have been built at houses for long time ago, and we can even see such porches at old wooden churches as an antechamber of the narthex. In the church porch, the people still gather today for priest awaiting or for the sake of seeing. In old houses people gather for storytelling, in discussions on various topics particularly religious, agricultural and fashionable then.
